Islands of Memories & Islands of the Mind

Islands of Memories and Islands of the Mind are continuations of the narrative after Points of Departure, which turn the gaze toward a constellation of Singapore’s offshore islands that have been slowly receding from social consciousness.

In Islands of the Mind, artist Juria Toramae creates a sculptural assemblage made of carefully chosen items which together suggest the notion of landscape as palimpsest.

In an associated installation, Islands of Memories, 64 framed prints repurpose personal and found photographs of ordinary people and things on the islands. As much as these ‘fragments of memories’ impart an idealised past of island life, they likewise suggest a part of said life that has remained beyond the mental landscape of the mainland Singapore.
