Before the Grey Dawn Breaks

I often document marine life in shallow waters before dawn during low spring tide. Despite darkness, the horizon would always be bright with light from adjacent refineries. This activity has become somewhat an obsession to document as much as I could as I am compelled by sense of awe and apprehension at the same time. As Rachel Carson aptly asked once, “What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?” In this body of work, layers of visual materials converge into rumination on marine heritage that is distant from our daily life.

The work was first presented in a group exhibition, Across the Sea of Stars, at Chiang Mai University Art Center from 7 to 27 July 2017.
