Islands of Memories & Island of the Mind

Islands of Memories & Island of the Mind turn the gaze toward a constellation of Singapore’s offshore islands that have been slowly receding from social consciousness.

Islands of Memories is an installation of 64 framed prints repurpose personal and found photographs of ordinary people and things on the islands. As much as these ‘fragments of memories’ impart an idealised past of island life, they likewise suggest a part of said life that has remained beyond the mental landscape of the mainland Singapore.

Island of the Mind is an assemblage made of carefully chosen items which together suggest the notion of landscape as palimpsest.

This work was first exhibited at Repurposing Nostalgia from 9 – 17 January 2016. Subsequently, it was exhibited at Pulau Ubin during Pesta Ubin Festival from 14 May – 12 June 2016.
